Bar mitzvah film opens US film festival

The Ventura County Jewish Film Festival in the US got underway yesterday, starting with a film about bar mitzvahs.

According to the Ventura County Star, the opening picture Sixty Six was a "skinny-boy, British, bar mitzvah version of My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Those who were able to view the movie may well have gathered some party ideas in preparation for their own bar mitzvahs.

Describing the plot of the film, the newspaper reveals how the star of the story Bernie gets excited during the preparations for his coming of age ceremony and frantically starts organising "the Jesus Christ of bar mitvahs".

However, the as events unfold, Bernie realises that the date of his big day clashes with the World Cup Final - and England are playing in it. All his plans appear to be in ruins - but it all turns out alright in the end.

A Jewish boy becomes bar mitzvah - son of obligation - when he turns 13 years old, while girls reach this stage of their lives one year earlier.
