Gift registries 'popular for all celebrations'

Registries for baby shower and birthday gifts are becoming more and more common, reports the Age.

According to the Australian newspaper, many large department stores are reporting rising numbers of people opting to set up gift registries, which are traditionally used for weddings, for all manner of celebrations, such as bar mitzvahs, anniversary gifts and christenings.

Myer spokesman Mitch Caitlin attributed the popularity to the changing attitudes towards marriage.

He explained that many people often leave marriage till later on in life, meaning they already have the vast majority of homewares.

Therefore, birthday gifts are a lot easier for registries to promote, he said.

"Registries have lost the stigma of being pushy or rude from a guest's point of view," said Carla Ferraro of the Australian Centre for Retail Studies.

"It's incredibly popular to engage a registry for any birthday up to 60, but 18ths, 21sts, 30ths, 40ths, 50ths and 60ths are more popular," she added.

People magazine recently reported Jamie Lynn Spears as arranging a baby shower registry at Babies R Us store in L.A.ADNFCR-1470-ID-18550299-ADNFCR
